Commerson’s Dolphin | Cephalorhynchus commersonii
This small cetacean is a fast and agile swimmer with a unique black-and-white coloration, for which it is nicknamed the “panda dolphin.” Its calves, however, are completely gray and change color as they reach adulthood. The Commerson’s dolphin is one of the smallest species of dolphin, measuring 1.2–1.7 meters. It lives in the temperate and cold waters of two parts of the world: off the coast of South America and around the Kerguelen Islands.
The sounds produced by the Commerson’s dolphin are high-frequency pulses that are largely inaudible to humans and lie beyond the hearing threshold of other dolphins.
